CARE GUIDE

Two hand processes meet in one piece. The surface carries Kali print: rain-fed Kenyan cotton pleated, packed with post-consumption iron, and dyed in tea residue and sun oxidation, developed in collaboration with Amos Kimani, 86, and Betty Cheruiyot, 23. The texture is made separately: cotton gathered, twisted, and treated until compression becomes permanent in the cloth. Both processes crafted in-house at the LilaBare atelier. High-waisted with a flat elasticated waistband. Midi length with full drape below the knee. Limited batch: the full process takes over two months, made entirely by hand.

The K.A.L.I. print is our latest textile creative developed through intergenerational exchange between botanical dye master artisan Amos Kimani, artist Betty Cheruiyot with LilaBare.

Unprocessed cotton is pleated and hand stitched to create resist points, then transformed using steel wool soaked in vinegar, sunlight and residue from Kenyan black tea. The surface develops slowly through oxidation, producing an irregular black and rust pattern that recalls aged batik, weathered earth and inherited cloth. Every length is fabricated and dyed by hand, so variations occur in each piece, making it unique to you.

Air between gentle wears. Handwash in cool water when needed. Machine washable on handwash setting, lowest temperature & spin cycle. Line dry in shade. Avoid handcast details when ironing.
